World War I, Opera, Google Hangouts, More – Thursday Morning Buzz, August 29, 2013

Wolfram|Alpha has a fascinating article on tracking life changes with its Personal Analytics for Facebook. This takes navel-gazing to a whole new level.

The DEXTRA photo collection has joined Flickr Commons. ” the collection consists of about 1,8 million photos and around 6,000 photo-technical artifacts…. The focus is squarely on commercial photography within the fields of architectural, industrial, fashion, theatre, product and portraiture. As a result the collection is a rich source not only to the cultural history of the 20th century, but also to understanding the industry and business of photography itself.”

FamilySearch has added several new records — including FindAGrave?

The Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City, Iowa now has its records online. There are over 20,000 records in its database.

Now available online — wills and personal letters from 230,000 British soldiers who served in World War I.

The Smithsonian Institution has released a free e-book about its digitizing efforts. “In “Best of Both Worlds: Museums, Libraries, and Archives in a Digital Age,” G. Wayne Clough, secretary of the Smithsonian, writes that digitization, or the process of translating images and data into digital formats, is necessary for the Smithsonian to maintain its national and international footprint.” (Hat Tip Library Stuff!)

Buffer now supports G+ for real, but unfortunately I’m still having problems with it… sigh… don’t get me wrong, I love Buffer. I sigh because I care.

Google Hangouts are going to get HD quality video. I have a rant about this.

Opera has released version 16 — 16! — of its Web browser.

You know that app Snapchat, which is supposed to be all cool and secure and temporary and stuff? Maybe it’s not….

Twitter is changing its interface for tweet conversations. About time.

I love your comments, I love your site suggestions, and I love you. Feel free to comment on the blog, or @ResearchBuzz on Twitter. Thanks!
