The FDA is developing a unique device identifier program for medical devices. The UDIs (Unique Device Identifiers) will be stored in a publicly-available database, but the database will be for device characteristics only and will not contain patient information.

Readex has announced a new collection of digitized Caribbean newspapers, 1718-1876. ” Featuring publications from 22 islands, Caribbean Newspapers will provide complete facsimiles of every available issue, including eyewitness reporting, editorials, legislative information, letters, poetry, advertisements, obituaries and other news items.”

Now available: a map of all Iceland’s glaciers (and subglacier volcanic calderas). “For the first time, all of Iceland’s glaciers are shown on a single map, produced by the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO), in collaboration with the U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) and Iceland Geosurvey. The map is the first to incorporate historical data and coverage from aerial photographs and remote sensing satellites, such as Landsat and SPOT, to show the change in the areal extent of glaciers during the past century.”

WIPO (The World Intellectual Property Organization) has added China’s national patent collecton to its online database. “PATENTSCOPE users now have access to English-language bibliographic data of Chinese patents and patent applications from 1985 through 1995 and from 1996 onwards the submissions include bibliographic data in English and Chinese, as well as descriptions and claims in Chinese.”
