NEW RESOURCES

New-to-me: a digital archive of DIY instrument plans. “A few days ago, Shane Speal of Cigar Box Nation wrote to inform us that he had updated the archive for DIY instrument plans on the site and that the plans are all free. For anyone who’s into building cigar box guitars, ukes, dulcimers, and the like, this is an amazing resource.”

TWEAKS AND UPDATES

Microsoft has launched a new tool for fixing update issues. “The new tool covers issues affecting Windows 10, Windows 8.1, and Windows 7, and the wizard guides users throughout the necessary steps to isolate the bug and find a way to fix it. The common errors experienced with cumulative updates on Windows 10 are also supposed to be fixed, and Microsoft is also offering an updated version of the Update Troubleshooter to help users.”

Michigan State University Library’s Turfgrass Information Center got a big update this month. “The Turfgrass Information Center of the Michigan State University Libraries announced it has received a generous donation of materials from Lee C. Dieter. This donation included well over 200 monographs, including works like the 1930 Lawrence Dickinson title ‘The Lawn’ accompanied by its rare book jacket and other important monographs such as Cunningham’s 1914 Lawns, Golf Courses, Polo Fields, and How to Treat Them and Sutton’s 1886 Permanent and Temporary Pastures…. Also noteworthy was the vast collection of invaluable serial materials produced by the Mid-Atlantic Association of Golf Course Superintendents (MAAGCS), including: Turf News, Turf News Letter, Mid-Atlantic Association of Golf Course Superintendents Newsletter, Turf Talk and Turfgrass Matters.”

Using 3D technology to preserve Hong Kong Kung Fu techniques. “There are hundreds of differing fight styles classed as kung fu, which soared in popularity globally following a series of films featuring U.S.-born and Hong Kong-raised actor Bruce Lee, who died in 1973. But as kung fu’s popularity waned in recent years, practitioners worried about passing the martial arts form to future generations. The 3D project, known as the Hong Kong Martial Arts Living Archive, aims to capture and preserve more than 400 different kung fu styles. About 50 have been recorded so far.”

SECURITY/LEGAL ISSUES

You can blame the Britney Spears death hoax on a hacked Twitter account. “Some Twitter accounts related to Sony Music were apparently accessed by hacker group OurMine this morning. The handles for Sony Music Global and Bob Dylan tweeted that Britney Spears was dead shortly after 8AM ET. ‘britney spears is dead by accident! we will tell you more soon,’ the @SonyMusicGlobal account read before the tweets were deleted. A rep for Spears confirmed to CNN that the singer was, in fact, still alive.”

RESEARCH AND OPINION

The Financial: How to Transform Georgian Agriculture – With Twitter. This is Georgia the country, not Georgia the state. ” Farmers can be much more effective if they have up-to-date information, on prices, practices and weather. With mobile phones and mobile Internet they can get this information when, where and how they need it. The promise of the Internet for agriculture has been a popular idea, and in Georgia, too, policymakers and donors have begun to explore the options. Some pilot projects seek to program specific platforms for farmers, in order to inform and engage them. What many of these attempts may have overlooked is that the best tool is already available: Twitter, with a few tweaks, could transform Georgian agriculture.” If anyone asks you what Twitter is good for, make them read this.
